But my love of playing ''kinky'' games got in the way of the profit making and I've had more reborn last chances than I've had doses of ManFlu!

My intention is to earn money at such a rate that retirement from the day job becomes not only an option but a virtual certainty.

I am loath to openly state the specific STT that I am playing in, but suffice to say that every profitable poker player will have a game he can revert to when the going gets rough and he needs to grind out a bankroll.

My argument goes as follows:
If I can play these $16 games and achieve a 20% ROI overall then the following would apply:
Playing 4 tables continuously it seems that each game lasts approx half an hour (winning takes 45 minutes, losing can take one hand!) such that 8 games per hour is roughly the norm.
So the earning rate would be 8 x 20% x $16 per hour = $25.60 per hour.
Curr exch says that is roughly £15 per hour.
At that rate it would take 70 hours play per month to cover my pay.

That sounds far too easy to be true, so no silly moves will be made until it becomes 100% certain that the above figures are accurate and sustainable.

So first thing is to establish a benchmark ROI.
Currently awaiting delivery of an extra monitor to enable me to comfortably play the four games while watching a DVD or Facebooking or whatever. The strategy I am using entails a certain amount of tracking, but does not require 100% attention at all times, so feel comfortable watching a film while playing. So at the moment more often playing just two or three games at once...FFS, I've only recently stepped up from one game at a time, so the implementation of more games has to be done slowly and carefully.
But, for the moment, the important thing is to hone the strategy and get a steady ROI showing up. Then need to build a bankroll enough to cover a years wages AND a suitable bankroll before considering taking that final step.

Kicked this off for proper only last Friday (29th April, 2010).
Current ROI is showing as +42% after 56 games. I realise this is statistically irrelevent, however it is most definitely a nice start.
I hereby promise to update this blog with my progress every one hundred games played.
====================================================================================

Bollocks!
That's the least I can say on what's happened.
My determination to do this was higher then ever before.
Then PokerStars decide to restructure all their STTs.Suddenly my $16 turbos disappear and are replaced with $10 and $20 ones with radically altered levels.
Had hit a terribly bad run but was in no way despondant and had started writing copious notes to form a strict strategy of how to play these games. But now they don't exist.
Ended having played 77 games and ROI had fallen to below 15%.

Moving on...another site and $22 games...only on game 19 so far, but will again post up after every 100 games.

Blogger game:

I have registered to play in the PokerStars World Blogger Championship of Online Poker! type='text'>Omaha Hi/Lo

Yet again I take another side road and think I've found my ''best'' game.
Well that may just be wishful thinking but at least I'm making regular cashes and have managed to buy all my Christmas presents on the strength of recent results.
The game is Omaha Hi/Lo.
I read SuperSystem II which has a great article about Hi/Lo.

The one singular point that had such a dramatic effect on my results was that you should not be playing hands that are devoid of an ace.
Any, and every, other hand will be a long term loser...so why play them at all?
Just play the hands that are long term winners...those containing aces.

The full explanation can be found in Doyle's superb book but, believe me, it's beautiful!

The chapter goes on to explain why the 9 should be avoided at all costs...it is so seldom held in the winning hands!

anyway...

I have taken a shine to Limit MTTs as the structure lends itself to a TAG policy much better than Pot Limit and the ''variance'' becomes much less dangerous.

So I am trying, very some may say, to play only Limit Hi/Lo games...or at least trying to only pay for Limit Hi/Lo games.
Poker Tips

This is primarily aimed at me. (But if anybody else can benefit from something in here then great!)

Things that I must remember to do...generally random notes from reading / playing in order to iron out mistakes from my game!

In Omaha...avoid the habit of ''risking it'' with two sets of suited cards. If they are otherwise unconnected then you will be throwing away lots of chips.

On the river do not bet if the only hand that can call has you beat.

There is no such thing as pot-committed. If you know you are beaten then save those last few chips for later.

In Omaha, if the big raiser has AA and the board is rainbow raggy but you have two pair...get those bloody chips in. (i.e. potraiser preflop also potraises post flop...massive odds on that he has AA)

Try to play to the nuts...but remember: Less opponents means less chance of the nuts being out.

My favourite hand?....9 10 J Q with some suited.

Players do not three bet bluff on the final table. (Well they will now against me!!!)

A minimum or 1/2 pot raise is a very effective bluff...and easy to get away from too.
Omaha. AAxx is fine to shove if you know you can get heads-up.

Play aggressively when heads-up...passive players get eaten alive. LAG not TAG.

Don't play danglers unless short handed.

Show aggression on any bubble...but at least give yourself a chance!

Remember that when three handed your hand is over 3 times as strong as when full-tabled.

If a few limp it round to your blind...stick some bloody chips in!

Don't give away free cards...rather give your opponent the option of folding.

Take notes!!!

Poker ramblings...

After 5 years of messing about playing every game I can the time has come to start taking it seriously. My bank transactions to and from sites shows a small profit over the years.
Add in a $6000 trip to Manilla, a computer games console and a variety of other prizes (rather than cash)...then I guess I am well in front...but not by as far as I feel I should be.
We all feel we can be pro poker players (if you don't then maybe you're reading the wrong blog) but do we have the drive to get us up there?

No!

As in life in general we become complacent...reach a certain level and then dig a trench and defend our position...moving neither forwards nor backwards...or, in other words, we stagnate, become stale and will never realise our potential.

Over the last year I have been reading lots of Omaha strategy guides and I really love playing this game...and I reckon this is definitely my strongest game.
But what do I do when I sit down with 3 hours to spare for a session?
There are no imminent Omaha games so I play a couple of Texas games to pass the time.
Or a 5 card draw or Razz to try something different for a change.
Next thing I've missed the start of the one Omaha game and lost half my bank in the process!

Idiot!

Did Ali ever have a wrestling bout while waiting for a boxing fight?
Did Bjorn Borg play squash while awaiting Wimbledon?
Did Michael Jackson get married in between...erm, oh damn yes he did!...scrap that one then!
Do Metallica lay down a dance single between albums?

Of course not!

So I have decided that I am an Omaha player (not hi/lo !!!)...and Omaha is what I will play.
I know I can make a steady profit from Omaha games so why the hell should I be playing so much Texas where the margins are becoming incredibly tight and so much harder to dominate.

OK

Ramblings over...for the moment.

ps...I will continue to play PL tournaments and other games with added value as I do enjoy them and the general added value, even in Texas Hold 'em, still makes them a viable proposition.
<img width='1' height='1' alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264100701382851010" />

Well...a few days of trying out an Ultra tight strategy on Boss Coolers gave me a peculiar set of results.
Beat the lower games comfortably but losing badly in the 10€ games.
Spent a day analysing my losing games and found that roughly a third of these were me varying away from my intended ''Bruce Lee'' strategy which, for the uninitiated is ''The Art of Sitting Out without Sitting Out''.
So I am logging the above stats and starting a new table for November...as I feel my poor showing so far was also adversely affecting my play and I really want to give myself a fresh start.
*****************************************
November 4th:
Have had a week to try these coolers and I think they are not for me.
Not really enjoying them, so tried multitabling to spice it up but then it is more difficult to observe the other players and choose the correct times to attack.
Just played my first 20€ game and ''won''...but enough is enough, overall results are slightly +ve ROI so a good time to call it a day I think.<br was gutted.
There were others on the table who had short stacks...
I had to fold...there was no other option.
This play was stupidity incarnate and I am utterly pi$$ed type='text'>A time to think...

I recently had a weeks holiday, paid for mainly by this years poker winnings.
A week to consider what my intentions are towards poker.
I love playing poker; Pitting my wits against other players for a few dollars; Enjoying the chat in my favourite forum, the Punter's Lounge.
We may all dream of being a top pro, making masses of money from the game we love to play.

But I am honest, at least to myself, I don't have the armoury, either financially or intellectually, to survive at the highest level.
So I will remain happy to make a steady profit from my poker.
If I can make a profit each month, or even each week, then I will be a happy man.

So Poker will remain, for all intents and purpose, my hobby; I'll continue playing because I enjoy playing, profit or not if truth be told.

I would still like to win the WSOP in London this year of course, but at least now I accept that this is only a dream but, as the song says...''Dreams can come type='text'>Poker WSOP

Well the WSOP will soon be upon us, the pot of gold at the end of the Poker rainbow, the target for all serious pro-players and internet amateurs alike.
However I now sit on the horns of a dilemma. (This can be pretty painful at the best of times!)
I have qualified for a 40 (max) player game on Bodog, offered through Rounders Radio, which offers a $12,000 WSOP package to the winner.
However the radio station has announced that the winner has the option of accepting $10,000 in cash.
1... I already have holidays booked, which clash with the WSOP.
2... I have NEVER played a single game of ''live'' poker and don't fancy my first game being the WSOP...another year or two on my back and I'll be raring to have a go, but I just don't feel I'm anywhere near ready for this yet.
3... I don't even have a passport yet, so it would be a blind panic to get one in time.
4... I can do a hell of a lot more with the offered money than just have a week's holiday and could even use some of it to gain experience of ''live'' poker to aid the learning curve.

I only entered the original freeroll because it was a PL focus game...I never expected to end up in this position.
So anyway, I am playing for the money, not the seat, and I just hope nobody gets uppity about this as there are clearly a few more doing the same.
I just wanted to be up front about it that's all.

Good luck to everybody else taking part.

My first real bad beat story

Last night playing in £10 Omaha MTT with 43 players.
One lad was raise raise raise and was so jammy he took a massive chip lead and was knocking everybody out. Now Mr Groutchy knocked me out of the last tournament so it was a case of sweet revenge I reckon.

Very happy with my own play, except for one silly move early on that didn't do much damage.

Ando_PL (aka mcgin) was left to battle it out with Xtrmntr3 (aka Norfolk...) in a dour head to head that lasted for some considerable time. and the worst is 45678.
Be wary about going in too heavy on the strength of A2**, this can lead to multiple split pots and you could end up losing money with a winning hand...remember with the low you are playing for half the pot and if this half is shared then you won't get a lot back!

Me and my Mam

<img style="display:block;
